Updates from the Artificial Kidney Project
In the ongoing quest to redefine kidney failure treatment beyond conventional dialysis, Dr. Himanshu Verma recently visited the United States to engage directly with global leaders working on the Artificial Kidney Project. During this visit, he met Professor Shuvo Roy, Director of The Kidney Project, which is pioneering the development of an implantable bioartificial kidney.
Dr. Verma shared his vision of advancing chronic kidney disease (CKD) care in India and emphasized the urgent need for transformative solutions for young patients starting lifelong dialysis. Professor Roy expressed appreciation for the work being done in India and discussed the current progress of the project.
The prototype artificial kidney has already undergone successful preclinical testing in animal models, including pigs, with encouraging performance outcomes. The team is optimistic that human clinical trials could begin within the next few years. Importantly, Professor Roy conveyed his commitment that when in-human trials commence, India will be considered a potential collaborative partner in this global effort.
As a message of hope, Professor Roy recorded a special video for patients — particularly young individuals newly initiated on dialysis — reinforcing that dialysis need not be a lifelong sentence. Scientific progress is accelerating, and the artificial kidney is steadily moving from concept to clinical reality.
This collaboration reflects our commitment to bringing global innovation to Indian patients and ensuring they remain at the forefront of future kidney care advancements.
